How VCE Study Score Calculations Work

Calculating an accurate VCE study score requires more than just adding up your SAC percentages. in reality, VCAA uses a detailed statistical process to standardise and moderate assessment marks across Victoria each year to ensure fairness across all schools.

Graded Assessments (GA1, GA2, and GA3)
Every VCE subject consists of three Graded Assessments (GAs)—typically a combination of Unit 3 coursework (GA1), Unit 4 coursework (GA2), and end-of-year examinations (GA3). Each GA is assigned a letter grade (from E to A+) based on state-wide mark cut-offs set by VCAA for that specific exam cohort.

SAC Moderation & Ranking
Internal SAC marks are not final. VCAA uses your school cohort's collective performance on the external exam to moderate internal school SAC scores. This process adjusts for differences in SAC difficulty between schools without changing your relative rank within your class.

Normal Distribution & Standard Deviation
Final raw study scores are reported on a bell-curve scale from 0 to 50 with a state-wide mean (average) of 30 and a standard deviation of 7.

What is the difference between raw study scores and scaled study scores?
A raw study score shows your relative performance in a specific subject out of 50. A scaled study score is calculated afterwards by VTAC (Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre) to adjust for competition levels across different subjects before calculating your aggregate for ATAR determination.

Why is there a separate calculator for each VCE subject?
Every VCE subject has vastly different grade distributions, SAC-to-exam weightings, and A+ raw score cut-offs. For example, the mark needed for an A+ in VCE Maths Methods GA3 is significantly different from VCE Physics. Subject-specific calculators account for these exact statistical parameters.
